Tritonis was the Haliad nymph of the salt-water lake Tritonis, in Libya. Our real Mermaid. Since then, the most famous Mermaid is definitely The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen – the fairytale story: The little mermaid rises to sea level on her 15th birthday. This day has been eagerly awaited, for each year during the previous five years has one of her sisters rose to the surface. The Little Mermaid thinks that the human world is the most exciting thing she can imagine. Until this day, she has only seen it through the ocean. It will be a fantastic experience and the best part is the handsome prince, whom she falls in love with and he also falls deeply in love with her. His ship is lost, and she saves him. The Little Mermaid will sacrifice everything to get the prince and entering into a deal with the sea witch Ursula. With her voice, she gets a potion that creates her into a human. But if she does not win the prince’s heart, she will die and turn into sea foam. The prince though is being fooled into believing else and decides to marry a princess (a transformed Ursula). Now it seems all hope is lost for the mermaid. But the mermaid sisters devise an agreement with the evil sea witch Ursula to get her back to the sea. She must kill the prince to become a real mermaid again. She cannot, and therefore she dies. Definitely my favourite story by Hans Christian Andersen. With its fairy tale form and its eternal themes like love, life and death have adventures like ” The Little Mermaid” over the years entertained both children and adults. Just as they have inspired musicals, cartoons and sculptures – of the more famous examples include Disney cartoon about the little mermaid and the national treasure, the statue of The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen harbour, Langelinie.
